Poetic Inspirations

Poetry inspired remarkable trios by three Romantic composers: August Klughardt's Schumannesque Schilflieder (Songs of the Reeds) from 1872 tell the poignant story of a man 'reunited' with the ghost of his lost love. British composer Felix White's evocative The Nymph's Complaint for the Death of her Fawn (1921) won a Carnegie Award and the admiration of Ralph Vaughan Williams.
