Chicago Opera Theater
Chicago Opera Theater expands the tradition of opera as a living art form, with an emphasis on Chicago premieres, including new contemporary operas for a 21st century audience.
Founded in 1974 by Alan Stone, Chicago Opera Theater has carved a significant place for itself in the operatic life of Chicago and has reached an audience of hundreds of thousands through its main stage performances, outreach, education and young artist programs. With each performance, COT strives to advance opera as a vital, living American art form. The Chicago opera season no longer ends with the final curtain of the Lyric’s season, but continues, with General Director Brian Dickie’s well-chosen repertoire and innovative artistic teams. Recently, COT has evolved as an opera company that is young, fresh, and colorful – an image well suited to its surroundings at the new Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park.
